church_hat.jpgGARDENS — Hats have been a part of the black church tradition for many years and a Miami Gardens church will honor this tradition with an afternoon of fellowship that will feature a fashion show and contest.

Universal Truth Center for Better Living, 21310 NW 37th Ave., will host a “Where Did You Get That Hat?” contest 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the community room. The church’s Fellowship Ministry is in charge of this event.

Regine Paul, chairwoman of the New Lyph auxiliary, said the show is designed to bring together members of the congregation and the surrounding community. The auxiliary regularly sponsors activities that promote self-discovery, service and fulfilling friendships.

Members of the group believe a casual, social environment with music and refreshments for “people who love their hats and fashion’’ would be perfect, Paul said.

The hat showcase will also promote UTC’s vision of attracting diverse ethnic and cultural communities. “We are more alike than different,” Paul said. “Hats are one thing that women have in common.”

In a twist, men will join women on the runway to model fedoras, caps and other classic and contemporary styles.

And hats will be available for purchase from vendors.

Tickets for the fashion show are $20 each. For more information, call 305-624-4991 or e-mail, newlyph@utruthcenter.org.

Also at UTC, the Rev. Tommie Novick Lunsford, a Mississippi minister and civil rights worker, will  address the congregation at the 8:30 and 10:50 a.m. services this Sunday.

Lunsford's appearance is part of UTC's 60-day non-violence campaign which is focused on spreading the message of peace in sermons and in church activities.
