frank_farmer.jpegTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida Surgeon General Frank Farmer has resigned effective Friday. Farmer sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott on Monday explaining that he was stepping down to help his wife Peggy as she deals with surgery and radiation following a breast cancer diagnosis.

Farmer said the cancer was diagnosed early and doctors “are optimistic for a complete recovery and cure.''

He will return to his home in Ormond Beach at the close of this year's legislative session that is expected at the end of this week. Scott did not immediately name an interim replacement.

Farmer is a former Florida Medical Association president and retired military doctor. He served less than one year in the position and also was the state's secretary of health.
