Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi said the money will help patients lacking health insurance.

The announcement came after the U.S. territory recently received $17 million to boost prevention and treatment programs in metropolitan areas.

More than 44,000 people on the island of nearly four million have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. It was unclear exactly how many patients are waiting for their medication.
