'Black History Month 2012'

The West Palm Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., chartered in 1948 with six members, is fairly typical. Its five-point programmatic thrust emphasizes Economic Development, Educational Developmment, Physical and Mental Health, International Awareness and Involvement and Political Awareness and Involvement.

The chapter has nearly 200 members, all college-educated women (“alumnae” signifying the difference between the collegiate chapters and the chapters of women that have completed college), with approximately 75 percent of them having graduate-level degrees or higher. All are registered voters; the chapter is a voter registration agent and many chapter members are voter registrars.

A key area of service are three youth programs: Delta Gems for high-school girls ages 14 to 18, Delta Academy for girls in grades six through eight and the Embody program for young men ages 13-17.

Helping to finance the youth programs are the Women of Excellence and Men of Excellence programs that recognize members of the community for their accomplishments in the areas of science, health, humanitarian education and other areas. This year the Men of Excellence Gala is set for June 9.

Like others, the chapter participates in and raises money to help address such community concerns as heart disease and breast cancer awareness.

Members regularly participate, along with youth participants, in heart walks, the Susan G. Komen Walk For the Cure, the leukemia walk and other service activities The West Palm Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is celebrating its Founders Day on Feb. 12 when members will worship at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach. Other Founders Day activities will provide opportunities for contemplation, renewal and rededication by members of the “Sisterhood Called to Serve.”

They are a reflection of their more than 200,000 sisters in more than 900 chapters in England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Republic of Korea and the United States.

That includes here in South Florida from Miami-Dade County to Belle Glade, Broward County to Fort Pierce.
