MIAMI _ The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the death of a 31-year-old man who died in police custody while being transported to a county jail following a traffic stop.

Bob St. Hilaire was being transported to a county jail late Thursday afternoon.

The specific reason for St. Hilaire's arrest has not been released, but it came after he was pulled over for an unspecified traffic violation.

“Homicide investigators advise that a uniform Intracoastal District officer performed a traffic stop on the vehicle that the victim was driving for a traffic infraction,” Det. Robert Williams said in a news release from the department. “During the course of the traffic stop, the victim was taken into custody for a traffic infraction and was being transported to the jail.”

The news release further states that St. Hilaire began to complain on the way to the county jail about not feeling well. Fire-rescue units from the city of Miami were called. He was taken to North Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The traffic stop happened at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, according to police. No other details were immediately released.

Detectives from Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau and investigators from the department’s Professional Compliance Bureau are investigating.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy.
