TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida legislators keep moving ahead with a bill designed to make it clear people can show a gun, or even fire a warning shot, without drawing a lengthy prison sentence.
A House panel on Thursday voted in favor of the measure (HB 89) partially inspired by Marissa Alexander.
The Jacksonville woman was given a 20-year prison sentence after firing a gun near her estranged husband. Alexander's conviction was thrown out by an appeals court and she is scheduled to have a new trial.
This means the full Florida House can consider the legislation when the annual session starts next month.
Two legislators voted against the bill.
Rep. Kionne McGhee, D-Miami, said he was concerned the bill was vague and could allow people to fire into homes or moving cars.
