MIAMI, Fla. – A schoolgirl smiles as Miami-Dade County Commission Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson places a colorful bookbag in her family’s SUV. Edmonson helped get local children ready for the upcoming school year at her 14th annual District 3 Back to School Bookbag Giveaway at the Joseph Caleb Center on Aug. 8. Edmonson was joined by her staff and volunteers from various organizations including Miami Power House Church, the Miami Children’s Initiative and Antler Temple #39 of the Elks. Due to coronavirus restrictions the bookbag giveaway was on a drive-through only basis and did not include the usual activities. More than 2,000 bookbags were distributed at the event or donated afterward to local schools. “We’re ensuring children are well supplied for school regardless of their parents’ financial circumstances,” Edmonson said. “Whether children are going face to face with their learning this year or virtual, they still need their supplies, and families still are in need of help because of COVID-19.”
