poetry-slam_web.jpgThis is the year to enter the fourth annual Poetry Slam at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Why? Because everyone who participates gets a gift.

New this year: There are four categories of poetry awards. A first, second, third and fourth place trophy will be awarded in each category.
• Group A: 13 to 16 years old
• Group B: 17 to 19 years old
• Group C: 20 to 24 years old
• Group D: 25 years old and over

Participants can recite their own original poems or choose other poems to read. A panel of judges will consider the poem’s merit, dramatic appropriateness and level of difficulty, the poet’s physical presence, voice and articulation, evidence of understanding and overall performance, along with the public reaction.

The winners of the competition will have their poems recorded professionally, placed on a CD and uploaded to a dedicated website for the winner to promote their project to the general public.

The poetry contest is a way to celebrate April and National Poetry Month, according to organizers. The library has collaborated with Holy-wood Records Worldwide LLC—an urban Gospel/positive music recording label that believes in promoting positive change in today’s society through music, networking, and performing arts to present the poetry slam, this year, organizers said.

Registration is required to participate in the poetry recital, which is scheduled for 2 p.m., April 19. Vendors are invited to purchase a table in the lobby and set up from 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tables are available for a cost of $25. Also, judges are needed to help determine the winning entries.

This event is free and open to the public. To register as a poetry contestant or a vendor, or to offer your services as a poetry contest judge, please call Desmond Hannibal at 954-357-6224, Steve Vinik at 954-357-6190 or Larry Holland at 954-357-5950 of the library’s programming staff.
